CLOUD is LIGHT, both in a physical and visible way. The cloud and the dynamo-powered LED’s complement each other in their impact upon the viewer. The transformation of energy in a single action creates the dramatic effect that draws the viewer closer to the object. Through making CLOUD the aim was to demonstrate that chemistry and physics can be combined to form an aesthetic display. Visually, it demonstrates the key principles of how the system works. Watch the movie to experience CLOUD.

CLOUD is created during my minor in Milan. After receiving the assignment, different phenomena were explored to see how the transformation of energy can be visualized. After this, the design for the machine has been made, making the machine both clear and esthetically pleasing. Looking for the parts in a relatively unknown city, has led to iterations on this design. Finally the design has been created and presented in a video and live presentation.

process-cloud

How does it work?
The cloud is generated due to the difference in pressure between the glass container and the atmospheric pressure outside. The alcohol, due to its quick evaporation and condensation, creates a dramatic change in the container forming cloud particles. The dynamo works with the same pump-action that is used to generate the pressure in the container.

What components have been used?
The dynamo torch components power the light, while the cloud is created in the container with the use of an air pump. This concept provides an attractive way of learning the chemical and physical principles simultaneously.
